Get Your Gamel-On! Part Two

Featuring Guest Artists Phyllis Chen and
the Electric Junkyard Gamelan
The Firehouse Space: 246 Frost Street. Nearest Subway: L train to Graham
Tickets: $15/$10 students with ID

Get Your Gamel-On! is a series of concerts presented by pianists Melinda Faylor and Manon Hutton-DeWys that explores all of the imaginative ways in which Indonesian Gamelan has been a source of inspiration to classical music, with an emphasis on works for the piano.

Pieces for the concerts are drawn from both the standard piano repertoire of Ravel and Debussy, and from the more contemporary works of György Ligeti, John Adams, Lou Harrison, Claude Vivier, Paul Dresher, and John Cage.

In addition, these concerts include traditional and modern Indonesian music performed on authentic instruments, improvisation with Gamelan, toy piano music, music on invented instruments, commissioned works from emerging composers, modern Balinese-inspired dance, and video.

Selections from Benjamin Britten's Illuminations
with Anna Williams, soprano
At last! John Ashbery’s translation of French poet Arthur Rimbaud’s final masterpiece before abandoning poetry at the age of 21, Illuminations (Norton, 2011) has been published. Ashbery’s rendering of all forty-four poems powerfully evokes the kaleidoscopic beauty of the original and creates “a vision of postdiluvian freshness” out of “the chaos of ice floes and the polar night.” This is a major literary event and we are going to celebrate it with poets and musicians Edwin Torres, Anne Tardos, Nicole Peyrafitte, Franklin Bruno, David Shapiro, Bree Brenton, Julie Patton, Madeline Gins, Richard Hell, Melinda Faylor, Anna Williams and Sharon Mesmer.
